Liberty Weeps

Updated: Aug 27, 2020

I vow that I will try to uphold the idea

ls for which the flag is flown.

Respecting the flag without understanding the ideas for which it stands dilutes the truth of who we are as a part of humanity.

Until we again believe that all men and women are created equal and deserving of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, we disrespect the memory of those that have paid, with their blood, the price for this idea.

Until we once again cry out:

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”.

We honor that which has no meaning as we forget the meaning of what we honor.

I want that lamp lifted beside that golden door.

I am the huddled masses, the refuge; I have been through the tempest and know that I have no home in this world and the idea of liberty is my heart's cry.

I want to remember that the rights we cherish are meaningful to humanity, even those that may not share my political beliefs or spiritual concepts.

I will try to live in such a way as to support the liberty of all because the idea that the flag serves is part of my soul.

So with tears, I type this; of both joy and sorrow.

Please remember if you have forgotten

Please learn if you are ignorant.

Or the idea of liberty is lost.

We are lost.
